Gambhir century puts India in control

Opener Gautam Gambhir hit his third century in four Tests to lead India to 179 for 1 on a truncated first day in the second and final Test against England on Friday.

The in-form Gambhir struck 106 not out and added 173 runs for the second wicket with Rahul Dravid to lift the hosts out of early trouble after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni elected to bat in overcast conditions.

Dravid shook off his poor form by scoring an unbeaten 65 after opener Virender Sehwag fell to Stuart Broad for a third-ball duck in the morning's second over.

The diminutive Gambhir struck 12 fours and a straight six against off spinner Graeme Swann, reaching his hundred after tea.

Play was called off with 18 overs remaining because of poor light, which had also delayed the start by 20 minutes.

Gambhir had scored a match-winning 104 in the second Test against Australia at Mohali in October and 206 in the drawn third Test in New Delhi.

He then made 66 in Chennai, after sitting out the last Test against Australia due to a disciplinary ban. India won that series 2-0.

England, demoralised by their six-wicket defeat in the first Test in Chennai after India achieved the fourth-highest run chasing a target of 387, failed to build on a promising start, often bowling too short.

EARLY ESCAPE

Gambhir survived a leg before appeal off James Anderson's first ball of the day but drove the next past cover for four before quickly settling down.

Broad, 22, replaced the off-colour Steve Harmison after recovering from a hamstring injury, and bowled a superb first spell of pace, swing and control.

He beat Sehwag, who hit a blazing 83 to trigger India's run chase in Chennai, with movement before inducing him to edge a swinging delivery to wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

Gambhir and Dravid, who made three and four in the first Test to prolong a poor run of form, saw off the testing morning spells by Anderson, Broad and Andrew Flintoff to guide the team to 51 for one at lunch.

Gambhir, 27, audaciously flicked over the slip cordon for fours against Anderson and Broad after lunch as England lost their momentum.

Only Swann, who took two wickets in his first over on Test debut in Chennai, created chances as left-arm Monty Panesar, under fire for his poor first test showing, failed to impress.

However, Swann was unlucky not to dismiss Gambhir.

Slip fielder Paul Collingwood could only get his finger tips to a thick edge when he was on 70 and two runs later the umpire turned down a confident leg before appeal.

Dravid swung Anderson to square leg for four in the morning, his first boundary in five innings, and has hit seven fours in his 205-ball effort.

Market opens on a firm note as political worries ease

The market opened on a firm note as political worries receded with Samajwadi Party (SP), a regional party, on making it clear during the week end that it will support the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), at a time when Left parties are on the verge of withdrawing support. All the sectoral indices on BSE, except the oil & gas index, were in green.

The Left front has set 7 July 2008 as deadline for the government to let them know whether it intends to approach the International Atomic Energy Agency to seal the India-specific safeguards agreement.

Asian markets which opened before Indian market, edged higher. The key benchmark indices in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan were up by 0.18% to 3.98%. US stock markets were closed for the Independence Day holiday on Friday, 4 July 2008.

At 10:20 IST, the 30-share BSE Sensex was up 286.54 points or 2.13% at 13,740.54. At the day’s high of 13,789.70, the Sensex gained 335.70 points in early trade.

The broader based S&P CNX Nifty was up 92.75 points or 1.96% at 4016.

The BSE Mid-Cap index was up 2.29% at 5,399.06, while the BSE Small-Cap index was up 2.22% at 6,593.01.

The market breadth was strong on BSE, with 1311 gainers outpacing 328 losers. 33 stocks remained unchanged.

India’s largest private sector firm by market capitalization and oil refiner Reliance Industries rose 0.94% at Rs 2118.80.

India's second largest software exporter by sales Infosys Technologies rose 3.17% at Rs 1810.

India’s largest private sector bank by market capitalization ICICI Bank rose 3.04% at Rs 618.90.

Reliance Infrastructure (7.30% at Rs 830), Jaiprakash Associates (up 6.26% at Rs 162.90), Bharat Heavy Electricals (up 4.78% at Rs 1572), DLF (down 3.82% at Rs 430), Larsen & Toubro (down 3.37% at Rs 2458.25) and State Bank of India (up 3.15% at Rs 1163), were the key gainers from the Sensex pack.

Telecom services provider Spice Communications was the top traded counter on BSE in terms of turnover. The stock rose 0.21% at Rs 73.10 on a turnover of Rs 2185.97 crore. Volumes in the stock were huge at 28.28 crore shares.

A block deal was struck for 28.24 crore shares of Spice Communications, amounting to 40.9% of equity, at Rs 74 each on the BSE today. Last month, Idea Cellular said it would buy 40.8% stake in Spice for Rs 2176 crore.

US light crude for August delivery traded at $143.92 a barrel and London Brent crude rose 23 cents to $144.65 a barrel. Crude oil hit a record $145.85 hit on 3 July 2008.

India's wholesale price index rose 11.63% in the 12 months to 21 June 2008, a 13-year high, and above previous week's annual rise of 11.42%, government data released on 4 July 2008 showed. Experts opine that the double-digit inflation is here to stay for some more time, but could trend down from September 2008.

As per provisional data, foreign funds bought shares worth a net Rs 372.35 crore while domestic mutual funds sold shares worth a net Rs 97.02 crore on Friday 4 July 2008.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers of Rs 120.10 crore in the futures & options segment on Friday, 4 July 2008. They were net sellers of index futures to the tune of Rs 215.54 crore and bought index options worth Rs 99.23 crore. They were net buyers of stock futures to the tune of Rs 221.21 crore and purchased stock options worth Rs 15.20 crore.

India's Harbhajan Singh on Tuesday came under a fresh attack by Australian cricketers with opener Matthew Hayden calling the off-spinner an "obnoxious little weed", a remark which has the potential to create more bad blood between the two teams.

The Indian spinner, who was at the centre of a racism row involving Andrew Symonds, has borne the brunt of the Australian sledging during the explosive tour which has been marked by a series of verbal exchanges between rival players.

"Its been a bit of a long battle with Harbhajan, the first time I ever met him he was the same little obnoxious weed that he is now", Hayden said on Brisbane radio.

"His record speaks for itself in cricket. There is a certain line that you can kind of go to and then you know where you push it and he just pushes it all the time.

"That's why he has been charged more than anyone that's ever played in the history of cricket," Hayden said. Hayden's fresh salvo came a day after the Indian team management lodged a written complaint with Match Referee Jeff Crowe regarding Australia players' "provocative" behaviour.

Hayden and Harbhajan were involved in an ugly tussle at the SCG on Sunday with the Indians claiming that the Australian opener had termed the Indian a "mad boy."

However, Hayden made light of the incident and claimed India was complaining because "they are losing every game they are playing."

"I called him a bad boy," Hayden insisted.

"He took offence to that, I thought that was quite funny. I said mate you should be flattered, it's a clothing range," Hayden said.

Meanwhile, former Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg also lashed out at the Indians.

"Ive really had a gutful of their whinging, this is international sport, obviously people are going to say things to try to unsettle you," Hogg said.

"It's not tiddlywinks. So long as it's not racial they shouldn't have a problem.

"As far as I am concerned if the heat is too hot in the kitchen then that's too bad.

"I reckon they should appoint an Asian referee for Indian games because when it's a non-Asian referee nothing against Jeff Crowe they never feel as if they are being listened to."

Hayden said he had told Ishant Sharma to settle down and on Monday quipped he would like to meet the stringbean paceman in a boxing ring.

"He is just young. I have said to him many times, you are 19, take it easy, Hayden said.

"At the end of the day you are 19, why dont you just worry about your bowling for a while," he added.

India's champion stuff too hot for Australia

Gautam Gambhir's blazing knock of 63 helped India crush Australia by seven wickets in the one-off Twenty20 international at the Brabourne stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Gambhir smashed six boundaries and a six in his 52-ball knock as India coasted to the victory target of 167, with 11 balls to spare. India lost an early wicket in the form of Virender Sehwag for 5, but Gambhir and Robin Uthappa (35) entertained the crowd with delightful strokeplay. The youngsters put on a quick 82-run partnership to put India on course to victory. Yuvraj Singh finished unbeaten on 35, inclusive of three sixes, while captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit a huge six to score the winning runs. Earlier, Ricky Ponting smashed 76 off 53 deliveries to guide Australia to a healthy 166 for 5 in their 20 overs. Harbhajan Singh was instrumental in restricting the Australians in the middle over, as he took one wicket for 17 runs in his four. Murali Kartik, making his Twenty20 debut, also impressed giving away 27 runs in his four overs. India are the reigning Twenty20 World champions, having won the inaugural tournament in South Africa last month. This is the first every Twenty20 international on Indian soil.

Australia innings:

Adam Gilchrist started his innings with a lucky boundary off R P Singh's second delivery as his attempted slash on the off-side went between the slip and wicketkeeper. Thereafter he smashed two more boundaries on either side of the wicket. He, however, fell for 12 when he played all over a full delivery from Singh off the fifth ball of the match.
Ricky Ponting also got off the mark in rather streaky fashion when his edge went to the boundary through the vacant slips region. He then announced himself with two commanding boundaries in Singh's second over as Australia raced to 25 for 1 after three overs. Hayden hit two huge sixes in successive overs off Sreesanth and Singh as Australia posted 42 for 1 in five overs. Irfan Pathan replaced Sreesanth, but was immediately taken to the cleaners as Ponting smashed him for four boundaries in his opening over. But Harbhajan Singh brought India back into the game when he claimed the crucial wicket of Hayden in the seventh over. The left-hander tried to play through the covers but inside edged it onto his stumps and was dismissed for 17. Andrew Symonds once again made his way to the middle to a hostile reception from the Mumbai crowd. Symonds and Ponting consolidated in the middle overs against the spin duo of Kartik and Harbhajan as Australia reached 81 for 2 after 10 overs. Ponting reached his half-century in the 13th over off an edged boundary that just evaded a diving Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It took the Australian captain just 33 deliveries to reach the landmark and included nine boundaries. Symonds and Ponting added 60 runs for the third wicket before the former was run out for 20 in the 14th over after a misunderstanding with his captain. Brad Hodge's horror run in India ended in quite the same fashion when he was bowled for 2 by Pathan as Australia reached 116 for 4 after 15 overs. Harbhajan dished out another tidy performance, claiming 1 for 17 in his four overs. Kartik also impressed, giving away just 27 runs in his four. Sreesanth conceded 22 runs in his final overs as Ponting hit him for two boundaries to take Australia to 149 for 4 after 18 overs. Ponting's entertaining knock of 76 came to an end when he dragged one on to his stumps and was bowled for 76. He hit 13 boundaries in his 53-ball knock before falling in the 19th over. Michael Clarke provided the flourish in the final overs, hitting 25 from 25 deliveries, including two boundaries as Australia ended on 166 for five in their 20 overs. The Indian seamers once again struggled to keep a check on the scoring rate as was the case in the recently-concluded ODI series between the two teams. Pathan chipped in with vital wickets to return figures of 2 for 34 in his four overs. The pitch looks good for batting and India will hope their batsmen can deliver in their first outing as World champions.

India innings:

After a quiet first over from Brett Lee , Gautam Gambhir went after Nathan Bracken and carted him for three boundaries in the second. Virender Sehwag hit a straight boundary off a yorker from Lee in the third over, but fell to the next for 5 when he edged behind trying to hit a wide delivery. Ben Hilfenhaus was introduced the third over and the move nearly paid dividends. Gambhir tried to loft over mid-off but holed out to the fielder. However, the bowler overstepped the mark and it was declared a no-ball. Uthappa started smashing the ball around as soon as he arrived at the crease. He smashed three boundaries off Lee's third over as India raced to 50 for 1 after five. Hilfenhaus also suffered in his next over as he went for 18 runs, including a six off a free hit by Gambhir. Gambhir and Uthappa were batting like real champions and no Aussie bowler was spared. They brought up their 50-run partnership in just 27 deliveries in the seventh over. Nothing seemed to be bother the two youngsters as they milked the bowling quite intelligently. India raced to 100 for 1 after just 10 overs. But, against the run of play, India lost the wicket of Uthappa to part-timer Michael Clarke in the 11th over. Uthappa tried to play it fine, but could only edge it behind to keeper Gilchrist for a fine knock of 35. His second wicket partnership of 82 in 52 deliveries with Gambhir had put India firmly on the path of victory. Gambhir, however, continued to bat solidly and reached his half-century off just 40 deliveries in the 13th over. In the next delivery, Yuvraj hit a flat six through mid-wicket to send the crowd into raptures and chants of "sixer, sixer" filled the stadium. Gambhir fell for a solid innings of 63, caught at midwicket, attempting a rash pull shot off Hilfenhaus. The left-hander hit six boundaries and a six in his 52-ball knock to lead India's run chase. It was his second match-winning knock in as many matches to follow up on the blazing 75 he made against Pakistan in the World Cup final. Yuvraj hit two consecutive sixes off Stuart Clark in the 17th over as India looked to finish off things quickly. Dhoni, who was greeted by chants of "Deepika", finished the match in style when he smashed Lee for a huge six over square leg. Yuvraj finished unbeaten on 31, inclusive of three sixes as India coasted to the victory target of 167, losing just three wickets, with 11 deliveries to spare.
India rose to the occasion very well and played like true champions. Barring for a few changes, it was the same team that was outplayed in the ODIs, but here they seemed unstoppable and had answers to everything Australia threw at them. The victory made it clear that the World Cup victory was no fluke and India are the best team in this format. The all-conquering Aussies have a lot to learn from them.

England's injury troubles deepened

England's injury troubles deepened this afternoon after paceman Matthew Hoggard suffered a back spasm during practice and was sent to hospital for scans. Hoggard's injury scare comes after fellow spearhead Steve Harmison underwent hernia surgery which ruled him out of the Test series against India, beginning tomorrow at Lord's.

Should Hoggard not play, England will be forced to field an inexperienced pace attack with Chris Tremlett or James Anderson expected to replace him. Stuart Broad has been earmarked for his Test debut in the absence of Harmison.

The depth of England's bowling stocks is being sorely tested with Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones already missing through injury. Couple their absence with that of Hoggard, Harmison and Ashley Giles, who has been ruled out for the summer, and you have the bowling attack which famously won the 2005 Ashes series against Australia.

England coach Peter Moores was full of praise for Broad, who is likely to partner the rejuvenated Ryan Sidebottom and either Hoggard or his replacement in a three-strong seam attack.
