Zimbabwe clinch famous win

Exactly four years and four days after they had last beaten a major Test-playing team, Zimbabwe turned the clock back at the same venue, and against the same opposition. What must have seemed like a gentle start to their African tour turned into a nightmare for West Indies, as Zimbabwe pulled the rug from under their feet during a stunning 30-run win in the first ODI of the five-match series in Harare. The match was set up by a spirited batting performance, which gave them a challenging total of 274, before the bowlers stifled the runs so effectively that West Indies fell short despite Shivarine Chanderpaul's unbeaten 127.

The game was astonishing not just for the result, but also for the manner in which it came about. This wasn't a victory brought about by one batsman playing a blinder or a bowler bowling a dream spell: five batsmen scored more than 25 to propel Zimbabwe's innings, while most of the bowlers showed outstanding control, with Prosper Utseya and Ray Price - back in the team after more than three years in the wilderness - being exceptional in the middle overs. It was only their second ODI win in their last 23 games, and the celebrations after the game indicated just how much the win meant to them.

West Indies, on the other hand, were utterly listless and lacking in intensity. They got the opportunity to bowl in helpful conditions after Chris Gayle won the toss, but made a meal of it, offering the batsmen too much width and plenty of run-scoring opportunities. The batsmen emulated the bowlers - Chanderpaul played a lone hand, but even he showed a strange reluctance to step it up. The rest of the cast was mediocre. Marlon Samuels played 49 balls for 25, while Runako Morton played dot ball after dot ball even as the asking-rate mounted. It would have been even worse for them had Vusi Sibanda not dropped Chanderpaul on 67.

An asking rate of 5.50 meant West Indies needed a strong start, and a major contribution from Chris Gayle, but neither happened. In the third over Gayle tried to play to leg, was too early on the stroke, and spooned a simple catch back to Elton Chigumbura. The fight, it seemed, went out of the innings right there. Chanderpaul kept them in the game by rotating the strike and bludgeoning the rare meaty blow - eventually getting to his eighth ODI century - but never did it seem the innings would be a match-winning one.

While West Indies were utterly insipid in the middle overs of the run-chase, Zimbabwe tightened the screw superbly with two impeccable spells by Utseya and Price. Both bowled in tandem, completed their ten overs on the trot, and conceded a combined total of 86. Even as the overs slipped, West Indies - and especially Morton - batted on seemingly oblivious to the target that had to be chased down. By the time the 118-run partnership was finally ended, the asking-rate had climbed to almost 16 per over, and any salvage operation was virtually impossible.

West Indies' effort with the bat had been equally uninspiring earlier in the day. Brendan Taylor started the onslaught for Zimbabwe with a 30-ball 27 and Matsikenyeri took charge at the death with a 40-ball blitz that fetched 55, as 81 runs came off the last nine overs.

The platform for that late charge was laid by a 90-run fourth-wicket partnership between Chibhabha and Hamilton Masakadza. Taylor's early blows ensured Zimbabwe had early runs on the board but his run-out, and the cheap dismissals of Vusi Sibanda and Tatenda Taibu saw Zimbabwe slump to 78 for 3.

Chibhabha rescued the innings with some sensible batting, knocking the ball into the gaps and crashing fours through cover and point whenever offered the width. Masakadza played an excellent supporting act till he played across the line off Gayle and was trapped in front. Chibhabha had fallen in Gayle's previous over but the presence of two new batsmen towards the end of the innings did little to halt the momentum, as Matsikenyeri and Chigumbura turned it on in style, clouting leg-side boundaries as West Indies lost the plot with the ball and in the field. At the halfway stage, Utseya would have been satisfied with the morning's work. As it turned out, the afternoon got even better.

Pollock fifty props South Africa to 209

New Zealand gave themselves probably the best chance of putting it across to South Africa with a committed effort in the field, restricting them to a modest 209 for 9 under sunny skies at St George's Park in Port Elizabeth. A 90-run partnership between Mark Boucher and Shaun Pollock - who helped himself to a hard-working fifty, helped South Africa wriggle out of a tricky situation, before a late cameo from Andre Nel boosted them to a respectable total.

It was still a commendable recovery by South Africa, who were struggling at 66 for 5. The top order wilted under the pressure created at the start by an incisive opening burst from Kyle Mills, backed by restrictive spells from the two-pronged spin attack of Daniel Vettori and Jeetan Patel.

Mills meant business from the start as Herschelle Gibbs - returning to the side after an injury - and Graeme Smith were lured into the trap of playing outside the off stump, resulting in edges to the slip cordon. The catching and anticipation was sharp and agile, and New Zealand, sensing an opportunity to make further inroads, threw themselves in the field, plugging the gaps in the first Powerplay.

Mark Gillespie then trapped AB de Villiers at the crease with a delivery that maintained its line after pitching. At 20 for 3, the pressure began to tell particularly on Jacques Kallis, who was uncharacteristically scratchy in a situation tailor-made for him. Attempts at shuffling across the stumps to unsettle the bowler's rhythm were met with little or no success. An attempted upper-cut missed the outside edge by a whisker and the fielders patrolling the inner circle were kept busy each time Kallis attempted something different.

JP Duminy promised plenty with a couple of smooth drives on the front foot off Mills. However, a rush of blood cut short his stint at the crease as he attempted to loft Patel over deep midwicket. A short-arm pull by Kallis past midwicket brought much-needed cheer to the crowd which had gone quiet, but the Men in Black were the only ones celebrating the next ball, as Kallis stepped down and scooped the ball down deep-backward point's throat.

The rebuilding act by Boucher and Pollock wasn't electrifying but effective as they rotated the strike against Patel and Vettori. The first ten overs of the stand had little in market value - only 26 came off it - but the passage of play after the drinks interval followed a slightly different script. Pollock was fed with three gifts in succession by Gillespie - scooping two over backward point and dispatching the third back past the bowler - and suddenly the next ten overs yielded 58.

With the South African innings gaining momentum, Vettori pushed the fielders back. Boucher, in search of his fifty, attempted to launch Vettori down town but closed the face of the bat at the point of contact, failing to get the required distance. Pollock, who survived a close shout for caught behind off Patel, reached his fifty off a beamer by Gillespie but the bowler had the final say, cleaning him up with a yorker on middle and leg.

A sharp catch at deep midwicket by Lou Vincent dismissed Johan Botha but the best entertainment was to come when Nel walked in. Mills, not the best bowler at the death, was at the receiving end of Nel's willow. He helped himself to two boundaries - one slashed past gully and the other biffed to square leg, followed by a six over deep cover. Nel finished the innings in style with a six off Gillespie, giving South Africa hope. Still, the target of 210 could be tricky, keeping in mind the difficulties teams have had in chasing under lights, with the easterly winds blowing across the ground.

Kirsten to confirm acceptance next week

Former South Africa batsman Gary Kirsten on Thursday confirmed that he will take up the Indian coaching job.

"It is a great honour to be offered the coaching job of India, where cricket is a national passion," he told rediff.com over telephone from Cape Town.

"The BCCI has given me an offer letter with one week's time to reply back. So early next week I will reply to them," he added.

Kirsten emerged a surprise candidate to take over the post lying vacant since Greg Chappell's departure in April. The 40-year-old attended a secret interview with the Board of Control for Cricket in India's coach selection committee in Delhi on Monday.

"The meeting with the committee went off very well. It was good to know that they had so much confidence in me to take over this job," Kirsten said.

The committee that interviewed Kirsten included former India captains Sunil Gavaskar , Ravi Shastri and S Venkataraghavan, BCCI joint-secretary M P Pandove, treasurer N Srinivasan and secretary Niranjan Shah.

India's Test captain Anil Kumble was also invited to attend the meeting.

Kirsten also confirmed that it was the BCCI who had approached him.

"Yes, I was offered the job by the BCCI. I never applied for it, but it was them who approached me in the beginning of November," he confirmed. He played down the pressure involved in taking up such a high profile job.

"There is always going to be pressure in cricket. I have played under pressure for such a long time. As a coach my job would be to create an environment where all the players can perform at their best. That would be my priority," he reiterated.

The former South Africa opener said he hasn't made a decision on when he would join the Indian team.

"It is something that we are discussing at the moment. Obviously, the view of the senior players is important, so that is something we will discuss after I reply to the BCCI next week. Also, I have got a few commitments in hand."

Kirsten also added that he spoke with Kumble.

"I had a chat with him when I met during the meeting in Delhi. I get on along with him very well since we played a lot against each other. We will obviously continue to be in touch because it is important to know the feeling of the players," the South African said.

Earlier in the day, Kumble had given his approval to Kirsten's appointment.

"He has been in a team that has been successful in the late 90s. His skills as a player will be an asset to the team," the leg-spinner said on the eve of the second India-Pakistan Test in Kolkata.

Kirsten also seemed delighted with Kumble's comment and said: "I am happy with Kumble's comment. It is important to fall in relationship with players. India has got a good bunch of talented players; it is a good mix of youth and experience."

He also downplayed reports which said he had written in a tour diary in 1996 that India was not a good place to tour.

"I don't know where it came from. I always have enjoyed playing in India," he responded to the claims.

Kirsten is one of South Africa's top batsmen, having scored 7,289 and 6,798 runs in 101 Tests and 185 ODIs respectively. He retired from international cricket in 2004 after which he took over as South Africa's high performance manager. Later, he also set up the Gary Kirsten Cricket Academy in Cape Town and conducted a coaching clinic with the Zimbabwe national team in July this year.

Dravid unhappy with sightscreen height

India's batting mainstay Rahul Dravid is known to be a perfectionist. Hence, it came as no surprise when he found a chink in the position of the sightscreen at the B C Roy Clubhouse end of the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Having arrived at the ground earlier than his team mates for net practice on Wednesday, the former India captain seemed a bit bothered by the height of the sightscreen.

The height of the sightscreen at the B C Roy Clubhouse end, or pavilion end, is less than that at the opposite end.

However, Dravid said it is merely a suggestion on his part and up to the authorities to decide on the same.

"It is not only that Dravid wants to increase the height of the sightscreen. Don't go and tell everyone that I have told you to do it. You take the views of Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble also on it," he told the ground authorities.

Also, the fact that the seats in that stand are just above the batsman's eye-line, it could be disrupting, especially if spectators move between an over from that end.

But increasing the height of the sightscreen could turn out to be a big problem for the Cricket Association of Bengal. The seats at that end provide the best view in the ground and, therefore, could be highly priced. Thus, covering that area would mean loss of revenue.

Dravid, meanwhile, had a suggestion for the authorities.

"You know some grounds in England have those white transparent sightscreens. For the batsman it looks completely white, but the spectators behind it also can view the action without any problem," he said.

That suggestion got the authorities busy, deciding whether to increase the height or bring the sightscreen forward.

One hopes better sense prevails and player comfort gets the priority over anything else.

Viv is my hero, says Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar regards West Indies batting legend Vivian Richards as his hero, though he has never played against the legendary batsman at the international level.

"I had played against him only at the county level. He was then playing for Glamorgan and me for Yorkshire. He is my hero and playing against him is a special moment in my life. I cherish that", Tendulkar said at a photo exhibition, pointing to a snap showing him playing chess with Richards.

The exhibition of photos clicked by noted lensman Sumon Chattopadhyay on Indian cricket, had one that captured a young Tendulkar playing on the lane before his house in Mumbai.

The photo seemed to have turned the Mumbai batsman nostalgic and he exclaimed that even today he enjoyed playing cricket before his Bandra residence.

"It's great to play on the road. It's a time to relax and meet a lot of old friends. Even yesterday, I played on the road before my house," said Tendulkar as fellow international cricketers Sourav Ganguly , Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Karthik heard him in rapt attention.

About another photo taken just after his marriage and showing him walk with his bride Anjali, Tendulkar said "it's an extremely special moment of my life with my life partner walking with me."

Then he turned to Yuvraj, and said with a smile "I want to wish Yuvraj all the best when he gets married."

The entire gathering broke into spontaneous applause and there were peals of laughter all around.

Younis dedicates century to Woolmer

Vice-captain Younis Khan dedicated his match-winning 117 in the second one-dayer against India on Thursday to Pakistan's late coach Bob Woolmer. Younis anchored the innings as Pakistan recorded their highest successful one-day run chase to win with a ball to spare and level the five-match series 1-1. His third one-day hundred lifted the visitors to 322 for six after India totalled 321 for nine. "The situation required such a knock," Younis told reporters. "Today I tried hard and it worked and I can say it is special. "I would like to dedicate this innings to Bob Woolmer, especially the way he used to work with me." Younis, named man of the match, put on 102 for the fifth wicket with Misbah-ul Haq (49). When the centurion was out in the 46th over, Shahid Afridi [Images] took Pakistan over the finishing line with 29 not out off 14 balls. Woolmer died a day after Pakistan's shock first-round elimination at the World Cup in the Caribbean in March. The former England batsman was found unconscious in his Kingston hotel room. Police started a murder investigation days later after it was revealed the autopsy, which investigators said was inconclusive at first, found he died of manual strangulation. That investigation ended on June 12 when Jamaica's police commissioner said the constabulary would accept the opinion of three independent pathologists that Woolmer had died of natural causes, possibly a heart attack.

India, Pakistan fined for slow over rates

India and Pakistan were fined for slow over rates in Thursday's second one-day international, won by the touring side by four wickets. The players were fined five percent of their match fee and the two captains double the amount after both teams were ruled to have fallen one over short in the allotted time, the International Cricket Council said in a statement. ICC match referee Roshan Mahanama summoned both captains after the match before deciding on the penalty.

Pakistan scored 322 to win off the penultimate ball. Their bowlers conceded 31 wides in a tally of 41 extras and their Indian counterparts sent down 16 wides. According to the ICC code of conduct regulations governing over-rate penalties, players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.
